A scientific study at the College of Science at the University of Basrah, prepared by Dr. Laila Saleh Zaalan, examined organophosphate esters in indoor and outdoor dust in Iraq and the effects of human exposure to it.
The study, which was published in the journal Emerging Contaminants with CiteScore 9.7 and Golden open access, which falls within the framework of scientific cooperation with the University of Birmingham, estimated the level of human exposure to organic pollutants of Organophosphate Esters compounds that have recently spread in the environment globally due to their entry in the manufacture of consumer goods and polymers as additives that act as flame retardants and plasticizers.
The study included that people, especially children at the age of 1-3 years, are exposed to these pollutants through air, food and dust, and such exposure may lead to harmful health results, as some of them, especially halogenated ones, are considered carcinogens.
