Under the title (Basrah Environment is in Danger, Together We Protect It), Basrah University hosted the first meeting of the environmental team for Basrah Governorate, which included all government departments concerned with the environmental reality, as well as the local government, security services and other supporting bodies.
This meeting aims to assess the environmental reality of the governorate in a joint field by all stakeholders, determine the extent of environmental damage suffered by the governorate in the health, agricultural, industrial, economic and social fields, work to find effective solutions to it, and submit an integrated assessment to the central government and legislative bodies.
The meeting included a discussion of the work plans of scientific teams in the field of water and air pollution, oil pollution and climate changes, in order to identify requirements and obstacles and how to overcome them by the responsible authorities and the security and support bodies.
Dr. Muhammad Nasser Fares also indicated that the university’s role in this meeting is essential, as it worked to gather all concerned parties and unify efforts made to achieve specific goals, including informing those concerned in the central government and legislative bodies of what is happening and what will happen in the near future of major environmental disasters that the residents of Basrah will be exposed to and the negative repercussions at all levels, so it was obligatory for the university to take upon itself this project through its scientific, technical and administrative cadres in achieving the desired goals in the service of our people and our dear governorate.
