The University of Basrah concluded a series of first qualification courses for the inmates in the central prison in the governorate, and certificates of participation were awarded to the distinguished among them.
The qualification courses included several fields such as carpentry, blacksmithing, electronics and sewing, according to human rights standards followed inside places of detention.
The President of Basrah University, Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, stressed the importance of these courses for inmates in prisons in terms of rehabilitating and reforming them to integrate into society after the expiry of their sentences.
It is worth mentioning that the University of Basrah presented a pioneering project in Iraq to rehabilitate inmates in Iraqi prisons and began to rehabilitate the inmates of Basra Central Prison to be able to work in an honorable manner at the end of their legal sentences. This was by tracking the completion of the studies of the inmates to obtain their certificates, in addition to intensive courses, and thus the university got first place in the project to qualify prisoners for the Oscar for higher education in Asia.
