Commissioned by the General Secretariat of the Council of Ministers, the University of Basrah, through its environmental team, led by the President of the University and in partnership with the Southern Environmental Protection and Improvement Department, assessed the environmental and health reality of the Majnoon field areas and the Al-Nashwa area, using the latest technologies in the field of pollutant diagnosis and measurement.
The teams of Basrah University specialized in the field of air, water and soil pollution, accompanied by University President Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi and Dr. Walid Al-Moussawi, Director General of the Department of Protection and Improvement of the Southern Environment and their technical cadres, began conducting a field survey of those areas and taking samples of air, water, soil and crops. Data, information and observations were documented from the people and citizens who suffer from these diseases.
The visit also included a meeting with the officials and citizens of those areas and visiting the health centers there, as well as reviewing and evaluating the work of water projects and identifying the obstacles and challenges they face.
For his part, Dr. Muhammad Nasser Faris confirmed that the University of Basrah, through its environmental team, has developed an integrated action plan to assess the environmental and health reality in the various regions of the governorate, and that Al-Nashwa district is the first stop for the project (Basra’s Environment is in Danger, Together We Protect It), which is led by the university in partnership with the Department of Protection and Improvement of the southern environment, all state departments and concerned authorities, which aims to shed light on the deteriorating environmental reality of the governorate and work to provide effective solutions to address that reality.
Fares also indicated that the project's work plan will work on evaluating the environmental and health reality of the areas of Al-Zubair, Izz Al-Din Salim district, Al-Faw, Safwan and Shatt Al-Arab in the next phase, stressing that the University of Basrah has adopted the principle of working outside its walls to provide services to the community out of a sense of responsibility towards the issues that our dear governorate suffers from.
