A scientific study, titled (Synthesis, Antimicrobial, Antioxidant, Toxicity and Anticancer Activity of a New Azetidinone, Thiazolidinone and Selenazolidinone Derivatives Based on Sulfonamide), was conducted at the College of Science at the University of Basrah by researchers Zainab Kazem Al-Khazraji, Dr. Bushra Kamel Jadoua Al-Salami and Dr. Adnan Jassim Muhammad Al-Fartousi.
The study, which was published in the Indonesian Journal of Chemistry classified within Scopus Q3 containers, showed that the compounds azitidinone, thiazolidinone and sylazolidinone showed their good effectiveness as anti-bacterial, antioxidant and antagonists for MCF-7 breast cancer cells.
The results of the study concluded that the tested compounds containing selenium were less toxic than their sulfur-containing counterparts based on the LD50 value, and that the thiazolidinediones and sylazolidinones had anti-bacterial properties.
