The Date Palm Research Center at Basrah University organized a seminar on the role of date palm in reducing the effect of global warming.
The seminar, delivered by Dr. Hussein Jassim Sharif, aimed at proving the scientific relationship between date palm cultivation and mitigation of global warming.
The seminar discussed the effect of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane in increasing environmental pollution and raising the temperature of the lower atmosphere surrounding the earth, causing evaporation of water and thus increasing salinity, erosion and hardening of the soil surface, and a decline in fertility.
The seminar showed that planting one palm tree will reduce carbon dioxide by 200 kg annually, and that planting one million trees will absorb about 200,000 tons of this gas.
