The College of Dentistry at the University of Basrah organized a scientific lecture regarding trigeminal neuralgia, which was delivered by Dr. Hala Abbas Hussein.
The lecture included an accurate analysis of the severe pain in the face due to a dysfunction in the fifth cranial nerve, which transmits sensory information from the face to the brain and controls the muscles that play a role in mastication.
Given that this pain is repeated at a rate of 100 times a day, it can cause disability, which leads some patients to commit suicide.
The lecture aims to present the most important treatment methods that will reduce the intensity of pain, such as the use of carbamazepine anticonvulsants. Baclofen may also be used to reduce muscle spasms, or amitriptyline.
If the pain persists, doctors may resort to surgery.
