The University of Basrah participated in the Iraq Climate Conference 2023, which was inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia' al-Sudani, with an official and international presence.
The conference aimed to explain the national plans related to climate and clarify the mechanisms of national and international financing and the size of the planned transformation towards a green economy and a clean environment.
The conference included a discussion about the climate challenges afflicting the world and the most important problems facing countries, such as the scarcity of fresh water, and an explanation of the role of the United Nations towards these issues.
The conference highlighted locally the role of the national private sector in implementing climate-related plans and projects, and the ambition of young people to lead the future of climate action.
The President of the University of Basrah, Dr. Saad Shaheen Hammadi, explained in his speech during the conference the academic and research role of the university in climate action, and confirmed that the university has a cancer research unit in the College of Medicine to reveal the relationship between disease causes, climate, the environment, and other factors, including waste and exhausts of machines and mechanisms, all of which require the approval of urgent legislation to reduce pollution, save the environment and preserve human health.
