The lecturer at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Basrah, Muhammad Taher Abdul-Razzaq Abdul-Rasul, obtained a patent for manufacturing an inactivated oily vaccine for Newcastle disease in pigeons from a local viral isolate PPMV-1 newly isolated from it.
The patent included manufacturing the vaccine after inactivating the virus using 0.1% formaldehyde. The vaccine was composed of two parts, oil and water, at a ratio of 1:1. It was tested in the field in the pigeons, where it gave good results by increasing the immune bodies significantly at a rate of 1024 using the HI hemoglobin inhibition test, as this rate is considered sufficient to give protection up to approximately 95%, according to researcher Alexand.
