A doctoral dissertation at the College of Engineering at the University of Basrah discussed the simulation of rainfall and surface runoff in the Diyala River Basin in Iraq. The study employed hydrological and hydraulic models, artificial neural networks, and geographic information systems (GIS).
The dissertation, which was presented by the student Fares Sahib Mohammed Ali, utilized geographic information systems (GIS) software and its extensions, such as Arc Hydro, HEC_GeoHMS, and HEC-GeoRAS. This was done by relying on remote sensing imagery, including digital elevation models (DEM) obtained from the official website of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Additionally, satellite images for soil types were sourced from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and land use and land cover data (LULC) were acquired from the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI).
