A research team at the University of Basrah is opening the genetic map of the Fasciola gigentica parasite
A research team at the University of Basrah, composed of veterinarian Fatima Al-Zahraa Aqeel, Dr. Suzan Abdel-Jabbar Abdel-Aziz from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Fatima Hassan Al-Atbi from the National University of Dhi Qar, and Dr. Maan Mohsen Al-Naqeeb from the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Kufa, opened the complete genetic map. The parasite Fasciola gigentica, which is considered a parasitic worm on small and large ruminants, has the potential to infect humans, and causes a threat to the health of livestock as it parasitizes on the liver and leads to its damage and major economic losses.
The parasite was isolated from the livers of sheep and buffaloes settled in the city of Basrah, and precise molecular analyzes were conducted that led to the discovery of the genetic map of this parasite. It is certain that molecular genetic studies of the parasites have begun to attract the attention of researchers and interested parties at our university.
It is worth noting that this project was the nucleus of the graduation research of veterinarian Fatima Al-Zahraa Aqeel, and it was developed, the entire parasite was deciphered, and it was registered in the Global Gene Bank to rank No. 13 in the world and first internationally, and this is according to what the results showed with the NCBI Global Gene Bank.
