The College of Education for Women at University of Basrah organized an electronic lecture on welfare states, the Scandinavian countries as an example, and the requirements for their implementation in Iraq.
The lecture, presented by Dr. Maha Karim Ali, included introducing the concept of welfare states as the countries which implement the market policy in addition to providing services, social insurances and aids to the citizens in order to achieve a decent standard of living.
The lecture also showed that many countries have pursued the policy of welfare states, including the Nordic countries (the Scandinavian countries) which climbed to the top of welfare states for their comprehensive policy of securing social services and social security for all residents, as well as their commitment to providing the basic needs of their citizens.
The lecture indicated that the Iraqi Constitution of 2005 included in its paragraphs what supports the welfare state policies, therefore, there must be legislative, institutional and financial requirements in order for Iraq to rise to the welfare states ladder.
