A scientific study in the College of Science at University of Basrah prepared by Dr. Maitham Abdullah Ghali and researcher Rehab Nasser Younes examined (Tolerance of Benthic Diatoms to Severe Environmental Stress).
The study, which was published in the internationally ranked Journal of Biological and Applied Environmental Research, showed exposing diatoms to severe environmental stress and monitoring their ability to survive.
The study involved collecting sediment samples from three locations along Shatt al-Arab River and applying different temperature systems to test the ability of diatoms to restore drought.
The results of the study concluded that some types of diatoms can recover after exposure to severe environmental stress, and a new type of diatoms was found and registered as a new species in the world.
